About HygieneRatings

HygieneRatings is a free, independent tool for checking the food hygiene rating of any UK food business: restaurants, takeaways, shops, supermarkets and more. It covers 613,145 food business records across 363 UK local authorities.

Where the data comes from

Every rating on this site comes from the Food Standards Agency (FSA), the official food safety regulator for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The FSA publishes its Food Hygiene Rating Scheme data as open data, made available under the Open Government Licence. We make the official data easier to search, but we don't set, change or influence any rating, and HygieneRatings is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, the FSA, Food Standards Scotland or any local authority. For the authoritative record, always check the official FSA ratings search.

How often it's updated

The FSA refreshes its published ratings regularly as local councils carry out inspections. We sync with the official data so the ratings you see reflect the latest published figures. Because ratings change only when a business is re-inspected, an individual rating can stay the same for months at a time.

Which schemes we cover

  • England, Wales & Northern Ireland: the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme (FHRS), scored 0–5.
  • Scotland: the Food Hygiene Information Scheme (FHIS), reported as Pass or Improvement Required.

Found something wrong?

Ratings are managed by the FSA and local councils, so corrections to a specific rating need to go through them. If a business believes its rating is wrong, see our guide on right to reply, appeals & re-ratings.
